    About these games

The Chimp Test recreates a well-known working-memory task from primate cognition research: young chimpanzees at Kyoto University's Primate Research Institute were found to briefly outperform human adults at recalling the position of numbers that vanish the moment you start clicking. It's a genuinely hard test of your visuospatial working memory — most people plateau well before double digits.

Sequence Memory tests a different kind of recall: how long a pattern you can hold and reproduce in order. Number Memory strips it down further, testing pure digit-span recall — the same skill behind remembering a phone number just long enough to dial it. Visual Memory pushes your spatial recall as a growing grid of tiles flashes and you click them back from memory, and Verbal Memory switches to words, tracking how many you can keep straight as SEEN or NEW before you slip.

The N-Back Test is the odd one out and lives on its own page: instead of a ladder you eventually fall off, it is a timed session you repeat, where a square jumps around a grid and you flag every repeat of the position n steps back. The level moves up and down on its own as you improve, and it is scored with hits, false alarms and d-prime rather than a percentage — because on a task where most trials are not targets, a percentage flatters you for pressing nothing.

All these games run entirely client-side in your browser. Nothing you do here is uploaded or stored anywhere except your own device's local storage, which is what powers your best score and history.
